Asturias has become a location for filming Marvel episodes
In the north-west of Spain, in the picturesque city of Oviedo, there is an architectural marvel that will attract the attention of anyone who even looks at it once. This Calatrava building is one of the most famous creations of the famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, built in 2011. Its unique style, reminiscent of both a futuristic ship and something from a fairytale world, makes it the perfect backdrop for extraordinary events. For example, one of the highlights of its history was the filming of Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is scheduled to premiere in July 2025.
Marvel film shooting in Asturias, Spain
For a whole week in November, this building became the headquarters of the United Nations (UN) in the film. The production team had done extensive preparatory work in advance, which consisted of a detailed study of the building and its architectural intricacies. For days, cranes, dark vans and large trucks surrounded the site, while a whole team of assistants, sound engineers, make-up artists, fashion designers, set designers, prop makers, costume designers and extras worked hard to realise key scenes in Fantastic Four, one of the most anticipated films for fans of the story.
Locals gathered nearby, watching the intricate film-making process with interest and curiosity. Shooting a film on the streets of Oviedo was a rare and exciting sight. Some even tried to get as close as possible to take a unique photo and, if they were lucky, to see the famous actors between takes.
The project is directed by Matt Schekman. The cast includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, as well as Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The story tells the story of how the UN faces a massive global threat. The big changes will see the Calatrava building transformed inside and out, including the main auditorium and glass room, which will be the main sets for the Oviedo scenes.
