Algar Waterfalls: Natural Park and Swimming Pools near Alicante

Algar Natural Park and WaterfallsAlgar Waterfalls (Las Fuentes del Algar)

The Algar Waterfalls, also known as Las Fuentes del Algar, are one of the most popular natural attractions in the province of Alicante.
The name “Algar” comes from an Arabic word meaning “cave” or “grotto”, reflecting the landscape shaped by water over thousands of years.

This natural park is located approximately 1 hour's drive from Alicante and just 27 minutes from Guadalest, making it ideal for a day trip.

The park is a picturesque natural area with cascading waterfalls, small rivers and natural pools with crystal-clear water, surrounded by dense vegetation.

Here, it is easy to feel completely at one with nature: walks along shady paths are relaxing, and swimming in the cool water is especially pleasant on hot summer days.

In summer, the natural pools of Algar are particularly popular. The cool water is wonderfully refreshing, and the small natural diving boards make swimming even more exciting. Children especially love this place.Climbing the stairs to the waterfall in Algar Natural Park

Despite its natural setting, the route through the park is clearly marked. Visitors are only allowed to walk on equipped trails and swim in specially designated areas — this is important for the safety and preservation of the natural complex.

The total length of the route is approximately 1.5 km. The walk follows the riverbed and partly climbs up the mountainside, offering beautiful panoramic views.

You can choose the format that suits you best: take a short walk and a swim, complete the entire route, or spend almost the whole day here, taking breaks for lunch and photos.

The park has toilets, a medical centre, restaurants and picnic areas. For safety and cleanliness reasons, bringing food into the park is not permitted. If you plan to bring food with you, it is best to leave it in your car and return for it when needed.

The issue of parking is particularly relevant during the high season, when the number of visitors increases significantly.

For trips like this, hiring a car in Alicante allows you to travel at your own pace and avoid time constraints.

There is free parking next to the Tourist Info Balcó d'Algar tourist information point. It is located approximately 700 metres from the entrance to the park and is a good option if you arrive when it opens. In summer, the waterfalls are usually open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and it is not too crowded in the morning.

Most tourists prefer the more convenient option and continue driving closer to the entrance. There are several paid parking lots along the road, where parking attendants actively invite visitors to park.

In our experience, it is better to drive a little further up the road. There is a more spacious paid car park there, which is more conveniently located and closer to the picnic areas.

Parking usually costs between €3 and €5. Admission to the Algar natural pools is also inexpensive, at around €5 per person.

💡 Important: to ensure that your holiday is not marred by unpleasant surprises, do not leave your car in unauthorised places and familiarise yourself with the parking rules in Spain in advance.

When is the best time to visit the Algar Waterfalls?

The Algar Waterfalls can be visited all year round, but the experience of the trip depends largely on the season.

Spring (April – May) is one of the best times to visit. At this time of year, the waterfalls are particularly full after the rains, the temperature is comfortable, and there are noticeably fewer tourists than in summer.

Summer (June – September) is the most popular season. On hot days, Algar's natural pools are a great place to swim and relax. However, it is worth bearing in mind that there are large numbers of visitors, especially at weekends and in August. It is recommended to arrive when the park opens.

Autumn (October) is ideal for leisurely walks and photography. Swimming is possible on warm days, and there are significantly fewer people.

Winter is the least popular time for tourism. Swimming is usually not an option, but walks in the park and views of the waterfalls remain impressive, especially after rain.
