Guadalest is an authentic open-air museum town, located on top of a rocky outcrop and surrounded by majestic mountain ranges. Here you can see ancient fortresses and churches, enjoy fantastic panoramic views of the mountains and turquoise reservoir, and sample local dishes in a café overlooking the valley.

Thanks to its unique location and rich history, Guadalest is ideal for a day trip from Benidorm or Alicante. This place combines cultural heritage, picturesque views and the atmosphere of an ancient Spanish town — everything you need for an unforgettable trip.

A brief history of Guadalest

The settlement was founded by Muslims in the 11th century. It was then that the Castillo de San José castle was built on top of the rock, which played an important defensive role.

Because of its dramatic location, the fortress was unofficially known as the “Eagle’s Nest”. However, two powerful earthquakes in the 17th and 18th centuries destroyed most of the structures.

Today, all that remains of the castle are ruins and a church tower, majestically towering over the gorge — and this is more than enough to make a walk through Guadalest truly atmospheric.
