Torrevieja is one of the most popular resort towns on the southern Costa Blanca, located about 50 minutes’ drive from Alicante on the Mediterranean coast. The city is known for its mild climate, sandy beaches and calm, relaxed pace of life.
If you are planning a trip and looking for what to see in Torrevieja, the city will pleasantly surprise you with its seaside atmosphere, scenic promenades, natural parks and interesting attractions both in the centre and the surrounding area.
This is a relatively young town. At the beginning of the last century, it consisted of a haphazard collection of fishermen's houses next to an old watchtower, which gave the city its name.
Salt extraction from the famous salt lagoons played a key role in the development of the city, transforming a small fishing village into a full-fledged resort centre.
Since the 1960s, construction and tourism have been actively developing here. Magnificent beaches, the Mediterranean Sea and a favourable climate contribute to a constant influx of tourists — not only in the summer months, but also in the off-season.
It is interesting to note that every year more and more people from different countries are moving here. Walking along the promenade, you can hear people speaking a variety of languages, including English.
Large English-speaking communities have formed in the city, with shops, restaurants and services catering to foreigners. At the same time, Torrevieja remains a typical Spanish city with lively markets, cosy squares and local colour. Street markets, which take place on Fridays, are especially popular here.
Top Attractions and Places to Visit in Torrevieja
Here you can find well-maintained city beaches, promenades, natural areas and tourist attractions that are suitable for relaxation at any time of the year.
Torre del Moro Tower
The tower that marked the beginning of the city's history.
Of course, over the centuries it has been reconstructed several times and has lost its original appearance, but today it looks well-maintained and fits harmoniously into the surrounding landscape.
The tower is located on a hill, surrounded by a small green park, offering a beautiful panoramic view of the sea.
Catholic Church
Iglesia de La Inmaculada Concepcion is located in the heart of Torrevieja, close to the town beach.
The building is interesting both outside and inside. Nearby is a small square with palm trees and a fountain, where city events are often held.
For example, shortly before Christmas, an exhibition of miniature biblical scenes is set up here.
Playa Del Cura city beach and promenade
Playa del Cura is Torrevieja's central sandy beach with well-developed infrastructure.
The Paseo Juan Aparicio promenade is a popular place for walks, starting in the port area and stretching along the coast.
Be sure to check out the Bella Lola sculpture — a sad girl sitting on a bench and looking out to sea, waiting for her sweetheart.
Here you can watch street performers and sample Valencian cuisine at one of the coastal restaurants.
Park of Nations (Parque de las Naciones)
When answering the question of what to see in Torrevieja, the Park of Nations can safely be called one of the city's main attractions.
This is a well-maintained green park with a large artificial lake in the shape of the European continent and flags of European countries.
There are fountains, numerous benches, and a large playground with a dragon slide, which children particularly enjoy. There is a small café nearby.
Peacocks and roosters roam freely throughout the park, while ducks, fish and turtles swim in the lake.
If you have difficulty finding parking, you can leave your car at the Habaneras or Carrefour shopping centres.
Salinas
One of the city's main natural resources. The pink and green lagoons are salt lakes, thanks to which Torrevieja is one of the largest salt production centres in Europe.
In the past, people even bathed in the pink lake for health reasons — salt water was considered beneficial for the skin and the body as a whole.
However, several years ago, swimming here was officially banned, but tourists continue to come to admire the unusual colour of the water, stroll around the area and take impressive photos.
Lagunas de La Mata
Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja — a protected area with a green saltwater lagoon located near Torrevieja, in the La Mata area.
This is a great place for peaceful walks and relaxing in nature, including with children.
The park has viewing platforms for bird watching and information stands with interesting facts about the local fauna.
There are also picnic areas in the shade of trees, where you can often encounter curious squirrels.
It is mainly accessible by car. There is a spacious car park nearby, and on the other side there is an additional recreation area with a children's playground (Albentosa Park).
On weekends and holidays, families often gather here: adults relax while children play or feed squirrels.
Water parks
During the summer months, water parks become one of the most popular attractions in Torrevieja, both among tourists and locals.
Aquopolis Torrevieja
Aquopolis is one of the most outstanding water parks on the Costa Blanca.
This establishment offers water-based entertainment for all ages and preferences.
There are areas and water attractions for small children, and there are some for adults. And very importantly, there is shade on sunny days, which are practically all the time here.
A great place to spend the whole day with your family. You can bring your own food or grab a bite to eat at the water park café.
Aquopolis is located next to National Road N 332, near a large square where various events are held and a market takes place on Fridays.
The car park here is quite spacious, but it costs €5 to use. You can also park nearby – there are large free car parks opposite the water park. We parked near Zona El Parking, for example.
Flamingo Water Park (Acuapark Flamingo)
The perfect place to relax with small children.
This is a small but cosy and clean water park with three slides for adults and two for children, two swimming pools and one pool just for kids.
Flamingo is located in La Siesta, 2 minutes from Carrefour and Habaneras.
Sun loungers are free here, and you can also bring your own food, but they warn you straight away that drinks must not be in glass bottles or cans, so keep that in mind.
You can also have a snack and a drink at the water park café. Flamingo Water Park has free parking, which is a nice bonus.
Ciudad Quesada-Rojales Water Park
Aqua Park Ciudad Quesada is located in the small town of Ciudad Quesada (a charming, mostly English-speaking town in the hills with beautiful houses and views), 15 minutes from Torrevieja.
It is a pretty small water park with 6 water attractions, 3 of which are for adults, 2 for children, and swimming pools.
It is very well suited for families with children. There are green lawns with parasols where you can sunbathe or relax in the shade away from the hustle and bustle, and sun loungers by the pool are available for a fee.
There is plenty of space for picnics, and you can bring your own food, but again, for safety reasons, glass and cans are not allowed.
There are no parking problems - the Rohales Water Park has a large free car park. Tickets, as everywhere else, can be purchased at the ticket office at the entrance or online on their official website, which is slightly cheaper.
