Guadalest what to see

Just 30 minutes from Benidorm and about a 1-hour drive from Alicante — and you find yourself in a small medieval village seemingly frozen in time. Narrow cobbled streets, old houses, and small squares create an atmosphere you will want to fully immerse yourself in.

What to See in Guadalest

Thanks to its unique location and rich history, Guadalest is perfect for a day trip from Benidorm or Alicante. This place combines cultural heritage, picturesque views, and the atmosphere of a small historic Spanish town — everything needed for an unforgettable journey.

Tunnel and Entrance to the Old Town

Entrance to the historic part of Guadalest

To reach the historic part of Guadalest, you need to pass through an 8-metre tunnel carved directly into the rock. This is one of the most recognisable and atmospheric elements of the village, instantly creating the feeling of stepping into an old Spanish town.

It is impossible to get lost here — there is essentially only one road. Through this tunnel, visitors enter the old town with its narrow cobbled streets, viewpoints, museums, and the ancient fortress on top of the rock.

Old Town of Guadalest

Right after the tunnel begins the old town of Guadalest — a small historic area with narrow cobbled streets, stone houses, souvenir shops, and small museums.

Despite the large number of tourists, the atmosphere here remains very cosy and peaceful. A walk through Guadalest feels relaxed and unhurried: many visitors stop at the viewpoints, photograph the mountain landscapes, and visit small cafés with views of the valley and reservoir.

It is here that you can especially feel the combination of history, nature, and the typical atmosphere of a small Spanish mountain town.

San José Castle

Main attraction of Guadalest - San José Castle

The main historical attraction of Guadalest is San José Castle (Castillo de San José), which, because of its unusual location, is often called the “Eagle’s Nest”.

It was built by the Muslims back in the 11th century. Thanks to its strategic location on top of the rock, the fortress served an important defensive function for many centuries and controlled the surrounding valley.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Guadalest experienced several powerful earthquakes that destroyed a significant part of the fortress. Nevertheless, even the remaining fragments of the old fortifications and the bell tower look very impressive thanks to their location above the gorge and the panoramic views of the mountains and reservoir.

Entrance to San José Castle is through the Casa Orduña museum. The ticket usually costs around 4 euros for adults and includes access to the museum and the fortress grounds with viewpoints.

Museums of Guadalest

Popular museums of Guadalest

Despite its tiny size, Guadalest has a surprisingly large number of museums. Many tourists even call it one of the most unusual “museum village” in Spain.

The most popular museums in Guadalest:

  • museum of microminiatures — a collection of miniature works that can only be viewed through magnifying devices;
  • museum of extraordinary miniatures — even more unusual miniature compositions placed on grains of rice, needles, and other tiny objects;
  • ethnographic museum — an exhibition dedicated to the traditional lifestyle and life of the region’s inhabitants;
  • museum of salt and pepper shakers — one of the most unusual collections in Guadalest with thousands of salt and pepper shakers from different countries around the world.

Even if you visit only 1–2 museums, your walk around Guadalest will become even more interesting and atmospheric.

Viewpoints and Panoramic Views

Viewpoint in Guadalest

One of the main reasons to visit Guadalest is the stunning panoramic views, thanks to which the village is often called one of the most beautiful in Alicante Province.

The viewpoints offer views of mountain ranges, gorges, ancient fortifications, and the turquoise Guadalest reservoir. It is especially beautiful here in sunny weather when the water takes on a bright emerald shade.

Many tourists specifically climb up to the fortress for the photographs and panoramic views of the Costa Blanca in an unusual mountain landscape.

Guadalest Reservoir

Guadalest Reservoir

The Guadalest Reservoir (Embalse de Guadalest) is one of the most recognisable natural attractions in this area and an important part of the famous Guadalest panoramas.

The artificial lake was created in the mid-20th century after the construction of a dam on the Guadalest River. Today, the reservoir supplies water to part of the towns in Alicante Province and at the same time has become one of the most photographed locations on the Costa Blanca.

The turquoise water surrounded by mountain ranges creates a very unusual landscape that sharply contrasts with the typical sea views of the coast. The best panoramas open from the viewpoints of the old town and the fortress grounds.

It is especially beautiful here in sunny weather and closer to sunset, when the water takes on a rich emerald shade and the mountains become golden.

Where to Eat in Guadalest

Despite the small size of the village, Guadalest has quite a few cafés and restaurants with terraces and panoramic views of the mountains and reservoir.

The menu most often features traditional dishes of the Valencia region: paella, tapas, grilled meat, homemade desserts, and local wines. Many tourists specifically stop for lunch after walking around the old town and fortress.

Most establishments are located near the viewpoints and the historic part of Guadalest, so during lunch you can simultaneously enjoy beautiful views of the valley and mountain landscapes.

Important: many cafés and restaurants operate until approximately 16:00–18:00, especially during the low season, so late in the evening the choice of places may be limited.
